Sea Hunt was his inspiration to learn to dive at the age of 15 at the original Bamboo Reef in San Francisco.
As soon as he got his drivers license, guess where he headed for a job?
You guessed it! San Francisco Bamboo Reef. Instructing, abalone diving, and commercial diving jobs took up most of his young-adult life and he's got the experience to prove it.

As a member of SSI's Platinum Pro 5,000 Instructor club, Tom has achieved what few of us only dream of, a lifetime of diving experiences all over the world, friends wherever he goes, and a passion for what he does. Whether scuba diving or abalone diving, Tom has helped thousands of people learn and love to dive!
You think you have a lot of gear? Over all those years working in the San Francisco store, Tom acquired quite a collection of dive equipment. In 1998 Miriam told him it was time to clear it out, and Sonoma Coast Divers (then Sonoma Coast Bamboo Reef) was born!
In 2011 Tom bought his partner Sal out of the store and changed the name of the store to Sonoma Coast Divers. Tom has built a reputation as an honest and generous business owner with a pure passion for diving- and a love of sharing that with others. It only takes a few minutes to see why we all love to hang out with him.
